Young Leaders

The Young Leader Programme is for young people aged 14 to 18 who want to support younger Scout sections while developing leadership, confidence and practical skills of their own.

Young Leaders are Explorer Scouts who volunteer alongside trained adult leaders, helping to run activities and support younger members in a fun, safe and welcoming environment.

What do Young Leaders do?

Young Leaders play an important role in Scouting while learning valuable skills.

They may:

  • Help plan and run activities and games
  • Support younger members at weekly meetings
  • Assist with camps, trips and events
  • Act as positive role models for younger sections
  • Learn how to lead, communicate and work as part of a team

Young Leaders are always supported by experienced adult volunteers and are never expected to run activities on their own.

What will I gain?

The Young Leader Programme helps young people to:

  • Build confidence and leadership skills
  • Improve communication and teamwork
  • Gain responsibility in a supportive setting
  • Work towards recognised awards
  • Gain experience that supports education, training and employment

The programme also links well with other awards such as Duke of Edinburgh.

Training and support

Young Leaders follow a structured training programme that helps them develop skills step by step. Training is designed to be practical, engaging and supportive.

They receive:

  • Ongoing guidance from adult leaders
  • Access to training modules and resources
  • Opportunities to reflect on and develop their skills

Where can I be a Young Leader?

Young Leaders support sections across Leatherhead District, including:

  • Squirrels
  • Beavers
  • Cubs
  • Scouts

Placements depend on availability in the groups and individual interests.
